Funding for Spanish Red Cross after floods

Following devastating floods in Spain’s Valencia region, the Goodman Foundation provided €50,000 to the Spanish Red Cross to support long-term community recovery. The response reflects the Foundation’s disaster relief focus. 

In late October 2024, the Valencia region of Spain was struck by the most destructive storms the country had seen this century.

Record-breaking rainfall and flash floods left hundreds of people dead. Tens of thousands were displaced from their homes. Over a million people across the region were impacted.

Sustained disaster relief

After a natural disaster, communities require sustained support to recover and rebuild their resilience.  The aftermath of these events can bring physical, emotional or social challenges, as well as health impacts.  After the Valencia region’s flood, authorities saw a spike in infectious diseases. Waterborne diseases also increased, due to contaminated water supplies.

Disaster relief is one of Goodman Foundation’s four areas of focus. We support communities to prepare for disasters, and work with partners who are equipped to deliver immediate and sustained disaster and humanitarian relief.

After the Valencia flooding we provided €50,000 to the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja Española) to help the organisation deliver a three-year community response plan.  The plan will benefit more than 100,000 people in affected areas, including Valencia, Cuenca, Albacete and Malaga.

It’s not the first time the Goodman Foundation has supported this respected disaster relief agency.  We also donated to the Red Cross in 2021, following floods in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium.
