Gen Z: what do they value?

Above all, Gen Z value authenticity. They’re more interested in authentic relationships, which is why they resonate more with influencers than traditional Hollywood celebrities. Globally, Gen Zer’s describe success as “being true to yourself”. ¹

Because Gen Zer’s are so digital-first, they connect virtually, and this can come at the cost of their in-person relationships. According to Neilsen, Gen Zer’s are deprioritising values like romance and love, but reporting higher rates of loneliness and isolation. They’re looking to fix this by connecting with their communities – almost 50% of Gen Z plan to be more engaged with their communities.²This is why values like self-worth and belonging are also important to Gen Z and influence the way they shop. ¹

Gen Z’s feelings of loneliness is tied to current global economic uncertainty.² Compared to all the other generations, Gen Z’s perception of the economy is the least positive.¹

Creativity is another value that captures Gen Z’s attention.² This explains TikTok’s rapid growth while other social media platforms are declining. Gen Z are curious and value their individuality – 45% of Gen Z like to be distinct from others. TikTok’s focus on self-expression resonates well with this cohort. 66% of Gen Z use TikTok.²

Retailers are building authentic connections with Gen Z through nostalgia and emotive storytelling. These strategies align with Gen Z’s value for belonging and relatability. Micro-targeting and hyper-personalising in ways that understand and align with Gen Z values are also proving successful with this generation.²

Shopping their values isn’t a concept specific to Gen Z, consumers from all cohorts do this too.
