"I think robotic solutions or robotic technologies should be the foundation of the smart warehouse” says Yong.
The logistics industry is always changing, which means supply chains need to be flexible to react to the market quickly. By being able to easily increase or reduce your capacity when required, you can save costs.
Due to their hardware, software and AI technology, robots are similar to self-driving vehicles. As robots move from one point to another, they know how to work around obstacles and avoid collisions. Because these robots can self-improve and self-correct, their picking efficiency is continuously improving.
Data also helps improve the supply chain. Young explains how having robots and a bigger robotic network in a smart warehouse leads to having more data which can be used to make forecasting orders easier.
While Yong encourages the uptake of robotics, he does it with the human workforce in mind. Robots reduce the need for people to walk as much around the warehouse, as they bring the goods to the person.
“It’s very important that we improve the working environment for our operators. We need people to work with robots together.”
