Goodman supports Mercadona in its e-commerce strategy in Barcelona

Goodman Group, a global leader in logistics real estate, has developed a new 10,500 sqm logistics platform for Mercadona in the Franca Area in Barcelona, exclusively dedicated to online sales. The strategic location of the new facility will enable the leading Spanish food retailer to provide a fast and efficient delivery service for its online customers in Barcelona city and surroundings.

This project, once completed, will be supermarket’s first online storage facility located in the city of Barcelona in line with the company’s strategic focus on renewing its online sales channel. Victor Ferré, Logistics Solutions Director for Mercadona Online said, “ by building this logistics platform with Goodman Group, we move one more step towards the development of the future ‘hive’ – the term with which we define the facilities dedicated to preparing online purchases- in the Franca Area, however there is still some way to go before it is fully operational.”

The new Mercadona facility will feature 10,500 sqm of storage space, with 2,500 sqm allocated to fresh products, including a cold storage area for refrigerated and frozen products that require temperatures below 20ºC.

Consistent with its sustainability strategy, Goodman has designed the facility to include elements that considerably reduce energy consumption such as solar panels, an electric charging station for cars and special insulation for the cold storage area.

Goodman worked with Mercadona to adapt the design of the facility to meet the specific requirements of its online sales channel to facilitate ‘last mile” delivery. For example, the level of the loading dock platforms has been reduced so that distribution vans used in the city centre, which are smaller than regular delivery vehicles, can be easily loaded with goods and delivered direct to customers.

Goodman Barcelona Port Logistics Centre: last mile logistics

This new project for Mercadona is the second logistics centre developed by Goodman in the Franca area in Port of Barcelona this year. This area is a strategic logistics location for customers requiring fast and direct access to the city centre, due to its proximity to the main transport and infrastructure nodes.

Goodman continues to grow its portfolio in Barcelona, where it has developed 105,000 sqm in the last two years and is currently developing several projects totalling 65,000 sqm in the region.
