Zalando, the leading online platform for fashion retail in Europe, has commissioned Goodman to develop a new 130,000 sqm logistics center in Lahr, located in Southern Germany. The logistics property group is the investor and will be the asset manager of the new ecommerce logistics facility, which will be one of largest of its kind in Europe upon completion.
The new location will allow Zalando to serve customers in Southern Germany, Switzerland and France even faster, and to meet increasing customer demand. Test operations for the new site are planned for as early as autumn 2016, and once operational, the new Zalando facility will create about 1,000 jobs at the site located in the Upper Rhine region.
"Customers are our main focus and we invest in numerous measures to further increase their satisfaction. Zalando Logistics plays a central role as one of our main competencies in our future development," said David Schröder, Senior Vice President Operations at Zalando SE.
As with the first two self-operated logistics centers in Erfurt and Mönchengladbach, both developed in two phases, Zalando has chosen to collaborate with Goodman, representing the fifth project Goodman has signed with the online fashion retailer.
"This development in Lahr is a testament to the successful continuation of our collaboration with Zalando. This property will be built on a brownfield site, converting a 185,000 square meter former military site, and further strengthening Goodman's record on brownfield conversion, which represents approximately 50% of all new development projects in Germany," said Jordan Corynen, Goodman Regional Director for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. "Furthermore, this project reaffirms our ecommerce credentials, having developed more than one million square meters of logistics space for online retail in Germany."
Lahr was chosen over a range of other German locations in the search process. "Our decision is based on a reliable cooperation with the state of Baden-Württemberg, the municipal development company IGZ and the city of Lahr. Likewise, Lahr's strong geographical location and infrastructure strongly influenced our decision," Schröder added.
Dr. Wolfgang Müller, Mayor of Lahr, added: "I am excited to announce this next step by Zalando and the decision to come to Lahr. It highlights how attractive the airport area and the location Lahr is in overall for new investors."
