Set to break a number of records, Amazon Australia today revealed plans to open its first robotics fulfilment centre at Goodman and Brickworks’ Oakdale West Industrial Estate in Western Sydney.
Announced today at a press conference on site led by the Premier of NSW, Gladys Berejiklian the fulfilment centre will be the first in Australia equipped with the most advanced Amazon Robotics technology. This will better assist employees, serve customers and contribute to the company’s efforts to deliver a smarter, faster and more consistent experience for its Australian customers.
The fulfilment centre will be the largest warehouse in Australia with a total floor area of around 200,000 square metres across four levels – around the same land size as Taronga Zoo or 22 rugby fields – and house up to 11 million items.
It will also be the first multi-level warehouse in Australia. This utilises Goodman’s experience in multi-level construction with the company having over 30 multi-level facilities either existing or in development in Europe and Asia.
Targeted for building completion in late 2021, the project will create more than 1,500 jobs with the opportunity to work alongside advance robotics. The construction and fit out of the state-of-the-art facility is creating an additional 700 jobs.
Amazon has worked with Goodman Group and its JV partner Brickworks to secure the site and Goodman is managing the construction of the facility which will require 13,500 tonnes of Australian steel, 3,000 tonnes more than the steel used in ANZ Stadium.
Goodman Group General Manager Jason Little said: “Goodman’s strategy is to provide our customers with high quality properties in strategic locations and this new Amazon robotics fulfilment centre is a perfect example of this.
The site is close to a large consumer population, transport links and the future Western Sydney International airport, making it accessible for faster deliveries both now and in the future.”
This is the third project Amazon is undertaking with Goodman in Australia, having recently announced Amazon’s first fulfilment centre in Queensland would be at Goodman’s Port Industry Park in Lytton, while Amazon has been a Goodman customer globally since 2006.
Oakdale Industrial Estate is a 50:50 joint venture between Goodman Group and Brickworks, which is home to local and global companies including DHL, DSV, Toyota, Petbarn, Sigma Pharmaceuticals, Iron Mountain and Briggs & Stratton. Oakdale West is a new part of this wider estate and will have a completed value in excess of $1.5 billion. Amazon are the second customer to commit to Oakdale West following Coles Group.
