Goodman Group, a global leading owner, developer and manager of logistics real estate, and the Fressnapf Group, Europe’s market leader in pet supplies, celebrated the topping-out of a new 31,000 sqm logistics centre today at the Port of Duisburg. The new plant for the Fressnapf Group is being created on a 47,000 sqm converted brownfield site in the world’s largest inland port and is scheduled for completion in December 2016. Sören Link, Mayor of the City of Duisburg, was among those present at the event.
The facility for the Fressnapf Group features 31,000 sqm of storage space and has a hall height of 12.20 m that allows for the integration of high storage racks and a mezzanine of 1,800 sqm. The additional hall height and the twenty-nine loading gates will help to achieve efficient intralogistics. Large windows will provide abundant daylight and the entire warehouse will be fitted with energy-efficient LED lighting. Because of the property’s sustainability features, the building will receive a Gold certificate from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) on completion.
“The new logistics centre being developed by Goodman will allow us to continue to grow our business by optimising our supply chain. The building specifications and access to the excellect infrastructure network available at the Port of Duisburg will allow Fressnapf to modernise our logistics through more efficient and faster handling of goods,” said Alfred Glander, Director of Merchandise, Logistics and Cross-Channel Marketing for the Fressnapf Group.
Optimal solution in a prime location
As the leading logistics hub in Central Europe, the Port of Duisburg proved to be the best location for Fressnapf, which will use the site as an import centre for goods coming from Asia and North America, after which they will be further distributed to its franchise partner stores and the company’s own network of stores.
Goodman is developing the new facility on an old industrial site, utilising its extensive experience in brownfield development, which can often involve complex permitting, the treatment of contaminated land and careful demolition management.
“I would like to thank the Fressnapf Group and Goodman for their business activities in our city and for the confidence they have placed in the economic location of Duisburg. I am sure that the Fressnapf Group will benefit from this city and its profile as a logistics location to further extend their excellent market position,” noted Sören Link, Mayor of the City of Duisburg.
“This complex project has required the cooperation of the City of Duisburg and the port authority as well as earning the trust of Fressnapf to believe in the quality of our solutions,” said Christof Prange, Goodman Head of Business Development for Germany. “We are proud to celebrate this development milestone with our partners and we look forward to fostering these partnerships in the future.”
Strategic location at the Port of Duisburg
The Port of Duisburg features over two million sqm of warehousing space and benefits from extensive and convenient rail connections to Europe and Asia as well as to the road network via the A3, A40, A42, A57 and A59 motorways. Because of its multimodal infrastructure and the wide offer of integrated logistic services, the Port of Duisburg is one of the top-performing logistics hubs for combined transport.
“On the site in the Port of Duisburg, the Fressnapf group benefits from the established infrastructure, from which to effectively service the whole of Europe. As such, we are providing dedicated support to ensure reliable shipping of the company’s goods. With Goodman, the Fressnapf group has a strong partner at its side, who professionally and successfully implements the conversion of brownfield sites,” said Markus Teuber, Chief Representative from Duisburger Hafen AG (Port of Duisburg).
After completion of the new development, Goodman will manage around 185,000 sqm of logistics space in the Duisburg region for Amazon, DHL, Fressnapf, HAVI Logistics and Volkswagen.
