Goodman Group (Goodman or Group), a global leader in the ownership, development and management of industrial property is currently developing a 70,000 sqm distribution centre for BMW Group in the Augsburg area near Munich and the new facility is already taking shape. Today both companies celebrated the topping-out ceremony together with State Secretary Franz Josef Pschierer, Head of the District Administration Martin Sailer, Mayor Rupert Fiehl and around 100 additional guests.
BMW Group is extending its after sales logistics, including spare parts and accessories. Against this backdrop Goodman is developing a regional distribution centre in Kleinaitingen with a distribution area that covers dealers in the German states of Bavaria, Baden-Wurttemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse.
"With the new distribution centre in Kleinaitingen, we will improve the efficiency of our distribution to our dealers in the four target regions, from which our customers will also profit. So far the whole process for this project was exemplary and fits well into our general planning to restructure the after sales logistics of BMW Group", explained Wolfgang Baumann, Vice President Parts Logistics Management, BMW Group.
Franz Josef Pschierer, Bavaria's state secretary for economy, commented: "This strong commitment from BMW Group to its home region Bavaria once again demonstrates the success of our policies to support growing business. In cooperation with all stakeholders of this project we created a framework that convinced BMW Group. The new facility is also an important economical impulse for the Augsburg region."
The new facility will be divided into 66,000 sqm of warehouse space, 2,000 sqm of office and social space and will include a 1,000 sqm open depot. Goodman is the owner, developer and manager of the property. The handover is planned for end of January 2016. Operations will start in the first quarter of 2016. The distribution centre will be run by a logistics provider that will be commissioned by BMW Group. The logistics provider will create about 240 jobs at the facility.
The facility will feature LED lighting and insulated dark tube radiators to preserve natural resources and will receive a silver certification from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) upon completion.
"The new development for BMW Group bolsters Goodman's strong automotive expertise and will further strengthen our portfolio in the state of Bavaria, which will represent close to 300,000 sqm of logistics space upon completion of the facility in Kleinaitingen. We are happy that we can celebrate the topping-out today as this means we are right on schedule," said Christof Prange, Head of Business Development Goodman Germany.
To date, Goodman already manages nine properties in Germany for automotive customers such as car manufacturers (OEMs), suppliers to the industry and several third party logistics providers servicing a range of automotive customers.
In the Augsburg region, Goodman already developed two properties for an e-commerce company and a logistics provider and manages both assets with a total space of 117,000 sqm. Further projects will be announced soon.
