New warehouses in Dornstadt and Bergkamen
Home and hotel furnishings company WMF Group has launched a new strategy to reorganise its logistics infrastructure to enhance the efficiency of its international supply chain. The company is consolidating 33 existing logistics locations into two strategic hubs. Against this backdrop, logistics property group Goodman is developing a new 21,000 sqm logistics property in Dornstadt, near Ulm, effectively doubling WMF warehouse capacity in the town. Simultaneously, Goodman is developing a second property for WMF covering 40,000 sqm in Bergkamen, near Dortmund.
WMF's new facility in Dornstadt will create up to 100 new jobs adding to its staff based at the existing soon-to-be adjoining facility. The second new logistics centre in Bergkamen will be operated by logistics provider DB SchenkerThese measures are the result of a restructuring process of WMF Group's logistics started in 2013
"In the interests of our customers, we set about centralising our logistics process to make it considerably more efficient. In cooperation with Goodman, we have focussed on two locations that provide us with optimal conditions for supplying goods throughout Germany and internationally," explained Dr. Clemens Wöhrle, President of Operations at WMF Group. "This new logistics centre in Dornstadt strengthens our more than 160 years presence in the region and is part of our broader investment plan."
Developing for the long-term
Goodman is providing a flexible and adaptive warehouse for WMF in Dornstadt. It consists of 18,000 sqm of logistics space that is complemented by a 2,000 sqm multi-purpose mezzanine. The design, which includes an inner hall height of 12.2 m, allows WMF to efficiently store the full product range of consumer goods such as cutlery sets and cookware, but also coffee machines and hotel articles for institutional customers. Additionally, the exterior of the building will be equipped with 18 gates to facilitate the efficient handling of goods. Within the property, Goodman is developing roughly 900 sqm of modern office and social space.
"As we can observe throughout Germany and Europe, consolidation of logistics operations is an important trend in order to increase operational efficiency, which is a key driver of business growth for our customers," said Jordan Corynen, Goodman Director Germany. "Together withWMF, we were able to design flexible warehouse spaces that can adapt according to WMF's evolving needs in two prime locations in two intensely competitive real estate markets."
In the design of the facility, WMF has profited from Goodman's extensive retail logistics experience, having developed approximately 675,000 sqm of logistics space for retail companies in continental Europe.
Strategic hubs to further efficient logistics
WMF Group will use these two facilities as strategic hubs for its logistics network to supply its own branded stores as well as to service retail customers and institutional customers such as hotels in Germany and internationally. To this end, Dornstadt is an exceptional location, with optimal infrastructure access to the A7 and A8 motorways and the B10 highway. The second hub in Bergkamen, situated directly on the A2, provides convenient access to the A1, B61 and B233, connecting WMF to the markets of western Germany, neighbouring Belgium and the Netherlands and the largest European ports.
